Guidelines & moderation
A shared wall
deserves care.
Light a Candle for Peace is a quiet place for messages of hope, prayer, remembrance, and common humanity. Every light is welcome in spirit; every public message is considered with care.
What this place is for
This wall is here for sincere expressions of peace: a hope for someone far away, a prayer for safety, a remembrance, or a quiet intention held without words. No candle is more important than another. We ask everyone who contributes to help keep the space gentle, human, and open-hearted.
It is not a public forum, a place to settle arguments, or a platform for political persuasion. A message may refer to the difficult realities of the world, but it should do so in a way that protects the dignity and safety of other people.
How messages are reviewed
Before a message is sent for review, we use a small automatic safety check to catch obvious spam, links, contact details, profanity, threats, and hateful language. This is only a first layer. It cannot understand every context, and it does not replace human judgment.
Messages that pass that first check are held privately while they are reviewed. A candle joins the shared wall only after its accompanying intention has been approved. Its burn time begins when it is approved, not when it is submitted.
We may take account of the words used, the likely meaning in context, and whether a message contributes to the purpose of this shared space. We try to make these decisions thoughtfully, but moderation is a human process and cannot be perfect.
What we cannot publish
We will not publish messages that demean, threaten, harass, recruit for violence, celebrate harm, or promote hatred toward a person or group. We also do not publish spam, commercial promotion, links, personal contact details, or material that appears intended to identify, expose, or target someone.
Please avoid using another person’s name or sharing private information. If you are writing about a difficult situation, a general intention is often more powerful than a message directed at an identifiable individual.
References to countries, communities, cultures, religions, or beliefs are not unwelcome in themselves. A prayer for people in a particular place, or a hope for a community facing hardship, may be exactly what this wall is for. What matters is that the message is compassionate and does not target, diminish, or endanger others.
Our discretion
We reserve the right to decline, withhold, edit for safety where appropriate, or remove any light or message that we believe does not support the safety, dignity, or purpose of this space. This includes messages that pass an automatic check but are not suitable for the public wall.
Approval is not guaranteed, and we may not be able to provide an individual explanation for every decision. A light that is not approved will remain private and will not appear in the shared wall. If a published message later gives us cause for concern, we may remove it.
Your candle key
When you place a light, you receive a private candle key. Keep it somewhere safe. It lets you visit your light later, see whether it is awaiting review or has joined the wall, and remove it.
Treat this key like a private access code: anyone who has it can remove that candle. It is not displayed publicly, and we cannot recover it for you, so please do not share it.
A small, clear boundary
This site is not an emergency service, counselling service, news service, or a replacement for local support. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, please contact local emergency services or an appropriate support organisation.
By placing a candle, you agree to these guidelines and to our moderation decisions. Thank you for helping make this a place where care can be visible — quietly, and without asking anyone else to carry harm.
May every light leave a little more room for one another.
